Karl Wittmann was born in Maxlried/Weilheim in 1945. He began his chartered insurance training with Munich Re in 1961, working as an underwriting technician in the Aviation Department and as an assistant underwriter in the Regional Department: Middle East, Far East, Australia and New Zealand. In 1970, Karl Wittmann was made Deputy Head of Munich Re’s London office. Following his return to Munich in 1985, he became a member of the Management of the Fire/Treaty Department and subsequently, in 1995, of the Operational Division: Asia and Australasia, and a Director. Mr. Wittmann joined the Board of Management in 1998 and is responsible for Asia, Australasia, Africa Division. He is married and has a daughter.

Patrick W. Kenny joined the International Insurance Society, Inc., as President & Chief Executive Officer in June 2001.  Mr. Kenny is responsible for the overall management of the IIS, a non-profit organization of insurance executives and academics, whose mission is to facilitate the worldwide transfer of ideas and innovations and to foster the development of personal networks across national and international insurance markets. The IIS, which was formed in 1964, today has over 900 members from 90 countries representing key insurance companies around the globe.

Prior to joining the IIS, Mr. Kenny was the Executive Vice President of Frontier Insurance Group, Inc. in Rock Hill, Rock Hill, NY, from August 1998 to March 2001. From 1995 – 1998 he served as Senior Vice President of SS&C Technologies, a technology corporation located in Windsor, CT.

Mr. Kenny served as Group Executive, Finance & Administration, and Chief Financial Officer at AETNA Life and Casualty from January 1988 to December 1994 where he was responsible for corporate finance, services and communications, as well as technology, investor relations and internal audit. Management responsibilities included overseeing 6000 employees.

Before joining AETNA, Mr. Kenny was the Partner in Charge of the Insurance Audit Practice and a member of the International Insurance Practice Committee at KPMG Peat Marwick from 1981 to 1987. Previously he served as Partner in Charge of the Continental Insurance Practice at KPMG offices in Paris, France and The Hague, Netherlands. Mr. Kenny started his career at KPMG Peat Marwick in St. Louis in 1966.

Mr. Kenny is a member of the boards of directors of Assured Guaranty, ING Partners Inc., Odyssey Re, IOF Forester and Overland Solutions. He is also a member of the University of Notre Dame Advisory Council for University Libraries.

A Certified Public Accountant in Missouri, Ohio and Connecticut, Mr. Kenny holds a Bachelor’s degree of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and a Master’s degree in Accounting from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Jacques Aigrain joined Swiss Re in June 2001 as Member of the Executive Committee and Head of the Financial Services Business Group. He succeeded John Coomber as Chief Executive Officer with effect from 1 January 2006.

Mr. Aigrain, a Swiss and French citizen, born in 1954, received a PhD in economics in 1981, from the Sorbonne, in France, after studying law at the Sorbonne and economics at Paris-Dauphine University.

Mr. Aigrain started his career with JPMorgan in various positions and locations, predominantly in investment banking, capital markets, and mergers and acquisitions. Immediately prior to joining Swiss Re, he was a managing director and a member of JPMorgan's investment banking management committee, where he was co-head of client coverage, responsible for the financial institutions and classical economy sectors.

Marvin Zonis is Professor Emeritus, the Graduate School of Business, The University of Chicago.

At Chicago’s Business School, Zonis teaches courses on International Political Economy, and Leadership. He was the first professor at the Business School to teach a course on the effects of digital technologies on global business. He also consults to corporations and professional asset management firms throughout the world, helping them to identify, assess, and manage their
political risks in the changing global environment. Zonis is a co-founder and Chairman of DSD, a software development company based in Moscow and Chicago. He is a member of the Board of Directors of CNA Financial, the global insurance and financial services firm, and the Board of Directors of Go2Call, a VoIP company. He is a member of the U.S. Comptroller General’s Board of Advisors for the General Accountability Office, a Fellow of Diamond Technology and Management Consultants, Inc., a global technology consulting firm, a member of the Board

What unites these activities is Zonis’ unique awareness of the intersections of politics, economics, emergent technologies and leadership. He is the former director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Chicago. He was educated at Yale University, the Harvard Business School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a Ph.D. in Political Science, and the Institute for Psychoanalysis, Chicago, where he received psychoanalytic training.

He represents the Standard & Poor’s Insurance Ratings Practice at public events regularly. Yann is based in Paris.

Yann joined Standard & Poor’s in December 1999, having previously been a senior manager with Paris-based audit firm Salustro Reydel. He specialized in insurance for most of his 9 years with Salustro Reydel working on a day-to-day basis with French composite insurers, reinsurers, captives and brokers for auditing as well as evaluations purposes.

Karel VAN HULLE is a lawyer by training and is Head of Unit at the European Commission (Directorate-General “Internal Market and Services�), which he joined in 1984 after having served 8 years with the Belgian Banking Commission.

He was subsequently Head of Unit for Accounting Standards, Head of Unit for Financial Reporting and Company Law and Head of Unit for Accounting and Auditing. In that capacity he was closely involved with harmonisation in the fields of accounting, auditing, and company law both at EU level and internationally and served as the Commission's observer with the International Accounting Standards Committee. He was Secretary of the High Level Group of Experts on Company Law which prepared the Commission’s 2003 Action Plan on Company Law.

Since November 2004, he is Head of the Insurance and Pensions Unit. In his present function, his main responsibility is the preparation of a new solvency regime for insurance and reinsurance companies (Solvency II).

Since 2007, Jerry M. de St. Paer has been Executive Chairman of GNAIE, the association of North American insurers representing the industry’s perspective in the development of international insurance accounting and solvency standards.

From 2007 to early 2008, he was Senior Vice President, Finance of AIG reporting independently to the Audit Committee on control and transformation initiatives.   He was Executive Vice President and CFO of XL Capital Ltd in Bermuda from 2001 to 2007.   Prior to that, he was a Managing Director of Hudson International and of JP Morgan in insurance investment banking.  From 1992 through 1996, Mr. de St. Paer served as Senior Executive Vice President & CFO of The Equitable Companies.  He was also Executive Vice President of the French insurer AXA, responsible for strategic studies and global corporate development.  Mr. de St. Paer joined The Equitable in 1986 as CFO of Equitable Investment Management Corporation. He was elected Senior Vice President and Treasurer of Equitable Life in 1990, and in 1991 Executive Vice President and head of Corporate Development, reporting to CEO Dick Jenrette.  Mr. de St. Paer managed the conversion of Equitable from a mutual to a stock company, including the investment in Equitable by AXA and Equitable’s  listing on the NYSE.

Mr. de St. Paer is a member of The Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council (FASAC) of FASB, The IFRS Advisory Council (SAC) of IASB, The Insurance Working Group of IASB, and The Advisory Council of The Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).  Mr. de St. Paer holds a BA degree in mathematics from North Central College (Illinois) and an MA degree from SAIS. 

Shaun Tarbuck was appointed chief executive of ICMIF in 2005 having been with the organisation for 10 years prior to his appointment, latterly as its chief financial officer.

Shaun regularly speaks at conferences on mutuality, demutualisation, governance, marketing and other strategic issues affecting the mutual and cooperative insurance sector.

Shaun, a chartered accountant, qualified in 1987 and subsequently worked in the captive insurance industry for 3 years in Bermuda before doing a year in corporate finance followed by three years as finance director of a newly demutualized life insurer in Manchester. He then set up his own successful insurance consulting and accounting practice before joining ICMIF full time in 1995. Shaun is married with 4 children and has a passion for rugby union being both a coach and referee.

Jonathan B. Harris is a director in the New York office and the leader of the Americas Insurance Practice. His current work focuses on strategic issues, operations effectiveness, and organization design in both property and casualty and life insurance.

Jon's recent experience on the P&C side has included multiple strategic and operational engagements for a leading international commercial lines carrier; broad agency-management redesign; improvement of underwriting performance in core commercial lines, including transaction execution, segment profitability, and portfolio management; and the redesign of front-line service and operations processes to improve customer retention and information flows. On the life and supplemental insurance side, he has worked recently on business unit strategy, change program design, and broad cost-reduction efforts.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Jon was an auditor with Touche Ross & Co., specializing in banking and health care. He holds a B.A. in English literature with honors from the University of California–Davis and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He is a certified public accountant, licensed in the state of California.

Axel Theis entered the Allianz Versicherungs-AG branch Stuttgart as a trainee, going on to work as personal assistant of the managing director of that branch office and finally assume his first management position as the head of liability there in 1992. Geoffrey (Geoff) Riddell is a member of the Group Executive Committee and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Global Corpo-rate Business of Zurich Financial Services (Zurich). He joined Zurich in May 2000, initially as Managing Director of Zurich Commercial in the UK, and then became Managing Director of the UK Corporate and Government businesses. In November 2002 he was appointed CEO of General Insurance in the UK, Ire-land and Southern Africa. Mr. Riddell assumed his current position in April 2004, and was promoted to a member of the Group Executive Committee in October 2004.

Mr. Riddell began his professional life as an accountant with Pricewaterhouse-Coopers. His subsequent career included an 18 year stint with AIG, during which time he worked within corporate business, reinsurance and personal lines as well as finance, IT, strategic planning and administration. He was responsible for the national management of AIG's Belgian, French and Hong Kong busi-nesses. While in Hong Kong, he was responsible for setting up the first foreign general insurance company in China.

Mr. Riddell holds a chemistry degree from Oxford University and is a Chartered Accountant.

René earned his doctorate in Physical Chemistry from Zurich University for his theoretical works on the interaction of light and matter in 1995. After a short post doctorate research assignment, he joined Sulzer, a Switzerland based engineering company, serving as deputy head of the laboratory, managing research projects and consulting with engineers.

He started his insurance career on an IT system development project with Zurich Financial Services in 1997. After completion, he moved to the actuarial department of Zurich Re as a reinsurance pricing actuary, specializing in natural catastrophe and structured reinsurance transactions. Subsequently he joined Risk Strategies, the non-traditional underwriting division of Zurich Re which spun-off from ZFS and became Converium. René was stationed in Singapore and Zurich, most recently as Underwriting Manager for structured reinsurance solutions and capital market transactions.

René joined ABN AMRO’s insurance team in 2005 and held positions in Singapore, Hong Kong and most recently London. The team specializes in the provision of tailor-made solutions for the bank’s insurance and pension client base, which can be executed as financial contracts such as derivatives, structured notes, guarantees or reinsurance. The team’s activities include economic and regulatory capital optimization, reserve financing, securitization of insurance risks and hedging hybrid risks such as GMDB.

 

Mr. Gerard van Olphen has been the Chief Financial Officer of Eureko BV since July 1, 2008 and its Vice-Chairman of Executive Board since October 1, 2008. Mr. Olphen has been Member of Executive Board of Eureko BV since 2002. He serves as Chief Financial Officer - Eureko of Achmea Association and Member of the Executive Board - Euroko. He served as Chief Financial Officer of Eureko BV from 2002 to April 4, 2007. He served as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Board Member of SNS REAAL and NIB Capital. He held various positions at AMRO Bank. Mr. Olphen joined Achmea Association in 2002. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Reaal Verzekeringen. He served as Member of the Supervisory Board at PZU S.A. Mr. Olphen background is ICT and Accountancy/Finance.

After graduating in mathematics, Volker Deville earned the doctorate in economics of the European University Institute. Areas of interest include international economics, demography, financial mathematics, and risk management; he lectures strategic management at Bayreuth University.

Volker Deville joined the Allianz Group in 1989, being responsible amongst others for global M&A activities and for financial planning and controlling. In 2000, he moved as deputy CEO to Allianz Life Insurance in South Korea. Some years later, he worked as Managing Director of Dresdner Bank on reducing its risk and exposure.

Since 2005, Volker Deville has served as Executive Vice President of Allianz SE as head of Group Development and currently at Government Relations and Public Policy. His tasks included the strategic positioning of the Allianz Group, international cooperation after the financial crisis, and work on risk and security issues.

Since 1998, Dr. Frank Ellenbuerger  is a partner with KPMG. After completing his Ph.D. in economics, he joined KPMG Cologne in 1988 where he built up the Center of Competence Insurance. He also qualified as both a CPA and tax accountant.

Frank provided auditing and advisory services to large and mid-cap financial service and insurance clients. One of his main areas of expertise lies in the Solvency II topic and the resulting implications for the insurance industry.

Frank is a member of the board of KPMG Germany. He is also the Global Sector Lead for insurance as well as Sector Head Insurance of KPMG Europe LLP.

Wilhelm Zeller has been Chairman of the Executive Board of Hannover Re since 1996. Prior to that he was a Member of the Executive Board at Cologne Re, Cologne, for over 18 years. In 1995, additionally, he sat on the Executive Council of the new owner, General Re Corporation in Stamford/CT, USA. From 1970 to 1977 he was simultaneously Head of the Casualty and the International Department at Zurich Insurance Company in Frankfurt. Before that he started his career in 1969 within the Gerling Group, Cologne. Wilhelm Zeller holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, majoring in Insurance, from the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne.

David B. Greenfield joined AXIS Capital in August 2006. Prior to joining AXIS, Mr. Greenfield was a partner with KPMG LLP, which he joined in 1984, serving clients in the financial services industry. In addition, Mr. Greenfield was KPMG’s Global Sector Chair for Insurance and a member of KPMG’s Global Financial Services Leadership Team. Mr. Greenfield was the lead partner for several of KPMG’s largest insurance clients. His leadership responsibilities at KPMG included international client development and management over teams of partners and staff globally.

Nelson C. Kuria, OGW, CEO, Co-operative Insurance Company of Kenya Since 1999, the Co-operative Insurance Company of Kenya has experienced a major transformation that has seen its positioning in the insurance industry improve from the bottom-five bracket to the top ten in Kenya in less than 10 years. This phenomenal growth was stirred by the strong leadership from the management led by Mr. Nelson Kuria. He embraced “servant leadership� which emphasized the fact that employees are servants and not masters of the customers. It was for his effort in turning around the company and a commitment towards the growth of the Co-operative Movement that Mr. Kuria was awarded the Order of Grand Warrior (OGW) in 2005.

Since obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from the University of Nairobi in 1979, Nelson Kuria has undergone extensive training in Strategic Management. The last ten of his thirty years in the financial services sector have been spent working for CIC Kenya, of which he is currently Managing Director
and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Kuria is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Leadership & Governance at a Theological University in Kenya.

Susan has been with Unum for 12 years since joining the company in 1995 as Director of Customer Services. As CEO, Susan leads the business in driving growth and development through the formulation of strategy that in turn directs operational activities and results. She
is also a member of the Senior Executive Team for the Unum Group with responsibility for determining strategy and improving performance of the overall organisation. Susan joined Unum from Private Patients Plan where she was Head of Customer Services. A graduate of Warwick University, Susan holds a degree in German and English.

Chakib Abouzaid, Chief Executive Officer of Takaful Re, is a
Moroccan. He first entered reinsurance in 1989 with Best Re and
was their Regional General Manager for Middle East and the Gulf.
His 17-year experience is focused mainly on Islamic reinsurance.

Mr. Abouzaid holds a Masters degree in Planning and
Development from Grenoble University and a Masters degree in
Finance and Insurance from Institute of Development and
Financing (IFID) in Tunis.

In his spare time he teaches Reinsurance Pricing for Masters
Students at the Insurance Institute of St Joseph University of
Beirut, Lebanon. He continues to give lectures at seminars and
conferences and writes for several insurance magazines

Len is Senior Vice President of American International Underwriters, the international insurance operations of American International Group (AIG). Len is the Director of Relationship Marketing for AIU. In this role, Len is responsible for developing strategic partnerships, alliances, and joint ventures with AIG’s largest global clients and business partners. The objective of these relationships is to develop new sources of revenue through the distribution of AIG’s products and services to the partners’ customers or employees. Quite often this is accomplished through the creation of private label products and services designed for a specific purpose.

Len is also responsible for a number of AIG cross selling initiatives within AIG, as well as developing major accounts word wide.

Len and his team have also launched a world wide strategy to provide insurance to the poor and are currently doing so in 10 countries, insuring close to 3 million individuals.
Len has been asked to manage AIG’s commitment to microfinance and micro insurance and as a result, has establish global partnerships with Accion, FINCA, Opportunity International, as well as with Unibanco in Brazil, Bank Rakyat in Indonesia, and a number of self help groups and rural associations in India, Uganda, Thailand and the Philippines. This initiative is viewed as one of AIG’s most important global enterprises and is one of the Group’s core businesses.

AIG also adopted microfinance as the recipient as its first corporate socially Responsible Giving, announcing two significant grants at last year’s Clinton Global Initiative.

Len originally joined AIG in 1980 and worked overseas for five years in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. He later held a number of senior management positions at Alexander & Alexander, Inc., where he established a number of new businesses, including a Global Infrastructure Group and a Privatization Consulting practice. During this period Len served as an advisor to the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Relations. Len re-joined AIG in 1999.

Len is a graduate of New York University and holds Masters Degrees in African Studies and International Affairs from the Columbia University’s School of International Affairs.

Len resides in New York City. Len is a competitive fencer, a well as an Elder and Trustee Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Stephen Packard is a Director in Deloitte Consulting’s Insurance Strategy & Operations practice, based in Hartford, Connecticut.  He has more than 25 years of experience assisting insurance companies deal with some of their most complex business issues, including:  strategy formulation and execution; corporate restructuring; shareholder value analysis; competitive benchmarking; product development; mergers, acquisitions and divestitures; business turn-arounds; and technology strategy and implementation. 

Prior to joining Deloitte, Stephen served in a variety of senior executive positions at Aetna, Travelers, and The Hartford Insurance Group.  He is an attorney and a member of the Connecticut and New York State Bars.  He was formerly a partner in Accenture’s global insurance practice and leader of its U.S. Mergers & Acquisition practice.   

Stephen has written and spoken on numerous insurance topics at various U.S. and international industry forums. He is a longstanding member of the International Insurance Society, and a member of the IIS Research Committee.

Andy Giffin is a recently Retired Principal of the Tillinghast insurance consulting unit of Towers Perrin (now Towers Watson) based in New York.  For 27 years Andy consulted on strategy and organizational issues for leading global and national insurers and banks primarily on matters of country market entry, expansion and repositioning in life and P&C insurance, pension and integrated financial services.  He managed projects in market entry, ERM program development, M&A transactions and integration, strategy implementation, regulatory issues and competitive market analysis.  Mr. Giffin was also the Publisher of Towers Perrin’s Emphasis magazine.

Prior to joining Towers Perrin in 1983, Andy served as Consultant for the Harvard Institute for International Development (HIID) [Indonesian insurance regulatory system], as Director of Management Services for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, as First Deputy Commissioner for the Massachusetts Division of Insurance and as Chief Counsel for the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.

Andy holds an MBA degree (Boston University), a JD degree (University of Wisconsin) and a BA degree (College of Wooster).  He currently serves as Vice President and as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the International Insurance Society.  He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Insurance Foundation, which helps national insurance supervisors meet global regulatory standards.  He is a frequent speaker and author of numerous articles and book chapters on strategic management of domestic, foreign and global insurance operations.

Andrew Rear is the head of Oliver Wyman’s insurance consulting business in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. Andrew is a regular commentator and speaker on the life and non-life insurance industry.

Since joining Oliver Wyman in 2000, Andrew has driven the development of our intellectual capital in a range of strategic themes across both life and general insurance, with a particular focus on understanding how leading players establish and sustain competitive advantage, and helping insurers to find the right strategic responses at group- and business unit-level as markets develop.

Andrew has authored a number of major publications including the firm’s research into The Future Regulation of UK Savings and Investments, commissioned by the Association of British Insurers in 2001 and its follow-up in 2002. In 2004 he authored the major study into the future of the global life insurance industry, Going on the Offensive: the $1,600 Billion Prize, and most recently in 2006 he wrote The New Federalism, charting the changing relationship between Group and Business Units across the major global insurers.

Before joining Oliver Wyman, Andrew worked in the UK life industry in a several roles covering marketing, strategy, and finance.

Andrew graduated from Cambridge University in Mathematics and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries. He has been involved in a number of professional and industry groups, across a range of topics.
