As Group Chief Executive and President of AIA Group Limited, Mark is responsible for building on AIA’s long history, financial strength and unparalleled platform across 16 markets to become the pre-eminent life insurance provider in the Asia Pacific region. With an exclusive focus on Asia Pacific, AIA today is the fifth largest insurance company in the world by market capitalization and the world’s largest independent, listed pan-Asia life insurance group.
Following his appointment in July 2010, Mark spearheaded the successful initial public offering (IPO) for the AIA Group. AIA’s listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on October 29, 2010 broke new records: the largest IPO in Hong Kong’s history, the third largest IPO in the world ever and the largest IPO ever in the insurance sector.AIA is already included in a number of leading market indices including FTSE, Hang Seng Composite and MSCI. AIA is the 8th largest company on the Hang Seng Index, and the largest Hong Kong incorporated company.
Under Mark’s leadership, AIA has been delivering high quality growth with Value of New Business increasing significantly over the last two and a half years.
Prior to joining AIA, Mark was Group Chief Executive, Prudential plc from 2005 to 2009, building it to be the UK’s largest quoted life insurance company, a FTSE 100 constituent with a market capitalization of circa US$30 billion. During his tenure, he led the company to achieve a total shareholder return that outperformed all key UK and European competitors, a track record based primarily on the development and expansion of its Asian operations.
Mark has been based in Asia for nearly 20 of his 25 years in the life insurance industry, initially as General Manager of Prudential Assurance Hong Kong and from 1994 to 2003 as founder Chief Executive of Prudential Corporation Asia.Mark directed the rapid growth of Prudential’s agency operations from a few hundred agents in three countries to over 450,000 agents across 12 markets.Mark was also responsible for developing a highly productive bancassurance operation and a well-regarded regional retail and institutional fund management business.
Mark’s experience has given him a deep understanding of the diversity of insurance markets across Asia and has also enabled him successfully to develop valuable relationships with regulators, national governments and key senior business figures across the region.
Mark is an independent board member of Goldman Sachs Inc, a board he joined in November 2012. Mark was a Non-Executive Director of the Court of The Bank of England and a member of both its Financial Stability Committee and its Audit and Risk Committee from 1 June 2009 to 31 May 2012; and since June 2010 has been a Member of the International Centre for Financial Regulation (ICFR) International Advisory Committee.
Mark has forged very strong relationships with regional government officials and regulators. He is one of only a very few recipients of the Government of Vietnam’s Friendship Medal awarded by the President of Vietnam in 2009 in recognition of his contribution to the development of Vietnam’s financial services sector.
Mark is a Chartered Accountant and tax specialist by training.
Outside the office, Mark is an avid soccer fan, having played professional football in both the UK and South Africa for a number of years.
Mark is a passionate collector of modern and contemporary art. Mark was also a Non-Executive Director of the world-renowned Edinburgh International Festival from 30 March 2005 to 9 May 2011. Mark is married with one son and one daughter.
