Michael J. Morrissey has been President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Insurance Society since 2009, and has been a member for more than 18 years. The IIS is an organization of insurance executives, regulators and academics, whose mission is to facilitate the worldwide transfer of insurance research and innovations and to foster the development of

networks across international markets. The IIS, which was

formed in 1964, has over 900 members from more than 90 countries representing key insurance companies, academic regulators and associations around the globe.

Prior to joining the IIS, Mr. Morrissey was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Firemark Investments. Mr. Morrissey was the Chief Investment Officer for the firm and invested in public and private insurance companies around the world. Mr. Morrissey has advised insurance company managements and regulators, and served on a number of insurance company boards. Morrissey currently is a member on the board of directors of Selective Insurance Group, Inc., where he chairs the Finance Committee.

Mr. Morrissey is the global insurance industry representative on the G-20 Private Sector Taskforce of Regulated Professions and Industries. He is also a member of the American Risk & Insurance Association, the

Asia Pacific Risk & Insurance Association, the European Group of Risk & Insurance Economists, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is a past president of the Association of Insurance and Financial Analysts.

Mr. Morrissey holds a B.A. from Boston College, an M.B.A. from

Dartmouth College and has completed the Harvard Business School’s Corporate Finance Management Program. Mr. Morrissey is also a Chartered Financial Analyst, and is profiled in "Who's Who in the World".

Norman R. Sorensen is Chairman of the International Insurance Society. Previously, Mr. Sorensen was Chairman-International and President & CEO of Principal International (NYSE:PFG) from 1998-2012. Prior to Principal, he was a senior executive at American International Group (NYSE:AIG) from 1989-1998, and before joining AIG, he held a number of senior international marketing and general management positions at Citigroup (NYSE:C) from 1984-89, and at American Express Company (NYSE:AMX) from 1972-84.

Mr. Sorensen has extensive experience developing and growing global consumer and institutional markets for financial services products with a focus on Latin America, Europe and Asia. Among his global responsibilities, he led Principal Financial Group's efforts to liaise with the Brazilian, Chilean, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and Mexican Governments on those countries’ Pension Reform projects at all levels of public and private sector policy.  Mr. Sorensen is the Senior Independent Director of the Board of DE Master Blenders ((Euronext/AEX: DE), and a director of Board of Encore Capital Group (Nasdaq:ECPG). He also serves on the Insurance Advisory Board of Pitney-Bowes Business Insights (NYSE:PBI); he is a member of the Council of Asset and Investment Management of the Institute of International Finance (IIF), and a former Chairman of the U.S. Coalition of Service Industries (CSI).  In the course of his career, Mr. Sorensen has appeared before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee at hearings on the U.S.- China Economic Relationship, before the Senate Finance Committee at hearings on the U.S. free trade agreements with Chile and Singapore, before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Trade at hearings on The Future of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and before the WTO Council in Geneva at hearings on The Future of the Doha Round of Trade Liberalization.

Mr. Sorensen, who speaks Spanish, Portuguese, German and French, is a Chemical Engineering graduate of the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) and of Columbia University’s Executive Program for International Managers.

Frank Swedlove is President of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association.  Established in 1894, CLHIA has 65 members accounting for 99 per cent of the life and health insurance in force in Canada.

Mr. Swedlove joined CLHIA in July 2007 after spending the previous year as President of the Financial Action Task Force, the international body headquartered in Paris responsible for the fight against global money laundering and terrorist financing.

Prior to that appointment, Mr. Swedlove served as a senior federal official. In his last position as Assistant Deputy Minister of the Financial Sector Policy Branch of the Department of Finance, Mr. Swedlove was the principal advisor to several Ministers of Finance regarding policy development on financial institutions and Canadian financial markets, playing a key role in issues throughout the sector and in international trade in financial services.

In previous positions at Finance, Mr. Swedlove was responsible for the 2001 financial sector review exercise, culminating in the total revamping of financial sector legislation. He was also the first Chair of the Committee on Trade in Financial Services of the World Trade Organization in Geneva, the Chair of the Negotiating Group on Financial Services in the Uruguay Round of the WTO, and lead negotiator for Canada in financial services at the NAFTA negotiations. Prior to joining Finance, Mr. Swedlove worked in the Industry and Energy departments of the federal government.

Donald Guloien is President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Financial Corporation. He is also a Manulife director and Chair of the Company’s Executive Committee.

A 30-year company veteran, Mr. Guloien has held leadership roles in both Manulife’s insurance and investment operations, and brings significant experience leading global M&A and business development activity.   Before taking on his current role, he served as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, where he was recognized as a leading global investment executive.

In that role from 2001 to 2009, Mr. Guloien was responsible for Manulife's worldwide investment operations, including management of the Company's $190 billion of general fund assets. He also led the significant growth of the company's external (third-party) asset management business, MFC Global Investment Management, a global leader in wealth management services, where as Chair he oversaw the management of more than $95 billion of diverse assets for external clients, including large pension funds, endowments and financial services companies. During that period, he also led the integration of Manulife’s investment operations with those of John Hancock in 2004, creating one of the strongest global investment management franchises in the industry.

Mr. Guloien brings wide-ranging international experience.  In his investment role he was responsible for Manulife’s global investment operations in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Asia. In June 2007, Mr. Guloien’s portfolio was expanded to include the company’s Asian Insurance and Wealth Management operations representing Japan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Macau.

From 1994 to 2001, he led Manulife’s Business Development unit, spearheading a number of key acquisitions, divestitures and strategic initiatives, including: the merger of Manulife with North American Life Assurance Company; the sale of Manulife’s U.K. business; Manulife’s transformational demutualization project (the conversion of the company from a mutual life insurance company to an investor-owned, publicly traded stock company); and its entry into Japan.

Mr. Guloien joined Manulife in 1981 as a research analyst and quickly moved through several strategic and marketing roles in both the Canadian and U.S. Divisions. In 1990, he became Vice President, US Individual Business, where he was responsible for the operations of the Company's individual insurance and annuity business in the United States.

Mr. Guloien is a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Geneva Association; and a Director of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association. He is also a member of the Young Presidents' Organization. Mr. Guloien is a former board member of the Children’s Aid Society Foundation, ThinkFirst Foundation of Canada and LIMRA International. He is actively involved with the University of Toronto, where he is a member of the Campaign Cabinet for the Rotman School of Management, and a former member of the Governing Council, the Dean’s Advisory Committee for the School of Graduate Studies and the Hart House Board of Stewards. He is a 1998 recipient of the Arbor Award for his contributions to the University.

Mr. Guloien holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto.

James M. Flaherty is a second-term Member of Parliament for Whitby–Oshawa (Ontario). He serves as Canada's Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the Greater Toronto Area. He is a Governor of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. As Minister of Finance he is an ex-officio member of all Cabinet Committees.

Minister Flaherty was recently awarded Euromoney Magazine's Finance Minister of the Year award. Euromoney credited him with enhancing Canada's reputation for sound fiscal policy while taking full account of social justice and overseeing a strong regulatory regime that has kept the financial sector out of chaos.

In 2010, Minister Flaherty was chair of the G-7 Finance Ministers and chair of the annual Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting.

Previously, for more than 10 years, he served as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Whitby–Ajax (Ontario). He served as Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, Attorney General and Minister of Labour.

He graduated from Princeton University cum laude and then graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Bar in Ontario with honours and practised law for more than 20 years before being elected to public office.

He is married to Christine Elliott, who serves as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Whitby–Oshawa. They live in Whitby with their 19-year-old triplet sons.

Stephen Catlin began his insurance career in 1973 joining BL Evens & Others on Syndicate 264 at Lloyd's. In 1982 he became deputy underwriter, specialising in the excess of loss and energy accounts where he was supported as a market leader. He founded Catlin Underwriting Agencies Limited in 1984 and was the active underwriter of Syndicate 1003 and later Syndicate 2003 until May 2003. From September 1996 to January 2002, he was the Lloyd's nominated Director of Equitas Holdings Limited. He served as Chairman of the Lloyd's Market Association, the trade association representing the interests of Lloyd's underwriters and underwriting agents, from May 2000 until January 2003. He was a member of the Council of Lloyd's from 2002 to 2004 and a member of the Lloyd's Franchise Board from January 2003 until December 2006.  He was President of the Insurance Institute of London in 2010-2011. 

He is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation. 

He was selected as Ernst & Young’s ‘UK Entrepreneur of the Year’ in October 2011. 

He is also Chairman of The Sick Children’s Trust, a UK charity providing accommodation for families of children who are receiving hospital treatment for serious illness. 

Mr. M. Ramadoss took charge as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of The New India

Assurance Company Ltd., on December 30, 2009.

Mr. Ramadoss is a First Class Commerce Graduate from Madras University in 1972. He became a Chartered Accountant from Institute of Chartered Accountants of India in May 1975. He is also a Fellow of Insurance Institute of India and an Associate of Chartered Insurance Institute of U.K.

He joined Insurance Industry in 1976 as Class I Officer in New India Assurance Company Ltd. and worked in various positions. In 2001, he was promoted as General Manager and posted to London Branch of New India for 3 years. He returned to India and joined Head Office in November, 2004. In March 2005, he was promoted as Chairman-cum-Managing Director and posted at the Oriental Insurance Company Ltd., another group owned Company. Mr. Ramadoss has the unique experience of having worked in the Insurance Industry in different parts of the country and different fields like Operations, Investments, Finance and Information Technology.

Since 1998, Dr. Frank Ellenbuerger  is a partner with KPMG. After completing his Ph.D. in economics, he joined KPMG Cologne in 1988 where he built up the Center of Competence Insurance. He also qualified as both a CPA and tax accountant.

Frank provided auditing and advisory services to large and mid-cap financial service and insurance clients. One of his main areas of expertise lies in the Solvency II topic and the resulting implications for the insurance industry.

Frank is a member of the board of KPMG Germany. He is also the Global Sector Lead for insurance as well as Sector Head Insurance of KPMG Europe LLP.

Dr. rer. pol. Ludger Arnoldussen was born in Duisburg in 1962.

Following a banking traineeship with Commerzbank AG in Duisburg, he studied business economics at the University of Cologne, obtaining a doctorate (Dr. rer. pol.).

In 1988, Dr. Arnoldussen began his career with Bayerische Rückversicherung AG, Munich, as a graduate trainee. Four years later, he was responsible for the founding and development of the Company’s Dublin office in Ireland. On returning to Munich in 1996, he became Head of the Non-proportional Division.

In 1997, Dr. Arnoldussen was appointed deputy member of the Board of Management of Bayerische Rückversicherung AG and was responsible for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Facultative Property/Casualty. He was made a member of the Board of Management of Bayerische Rückversicherung AG in 2000. In the following year, he assumed the position of project manager for the integration of Bayerische Rückversicherung into Swiss Re’s Europe Division and became a member of the Europe Division Executive Team. In 2002, Dr. Arnoldussen was, in addition, appointed to the Board of Management of Swiss Re Germany Holding AG and, in 2005, joined the Europe Division’s Executive Team Committee as Business Unit Head responsible for Northern/Central/Eastern Europe. Later that year, he was made Chairman of the Board of Management of Swiss Re Germany AG.

Dr. Ludger Arnoldussen was appointed to the Board of Management of Munich Re with effect from 1 October 2006, with responsibility for Germany, Asia Pacific and Africa Division as well as Central Division: Services. He is married and has four children.

Alan Zimmermann heads the property-casualty insurance research team at Macquarie Securities where he also focuses much of his attention on accounting, regulatory and other global macroindustry matters.

He joined the Macquarie in 2009 with the acquisition of Fox-Pitt Kelton Cochran Caronia Waller. At Fox-Pitt he held a variety of managerial and investment oriented positions including Director of US Research, Head of US Equities, and international research coordinator.

Prior to joining FPK in 2000, he worked for more than 25 years as an insurance industry analyst at various investment banking firms, including Smith Barney and Morgan Stanley, and for many years, was named to Institutional Investor Magazine’s All American Research Team as a top analyst for both the property-casualty and life insurance industries.

For the last seven years he has been a member of the IASB’s Working Group on Insurance Contracts and he is also a member of the joint IASB/FASB Financial Institutions Advisory Group.

He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and has an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Dirk Kempthorne was appointed president and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) in November 2010 after an impressive career in public service.

As president and CEO of ACLI, Governor Kempthorne is the chief representative and spokesman for the life insurance industry before Congress, the administration and in all state capitols. ACLI’s more than 300 legal reserve life insurer and fraternal benefit society member companies account for over 90 percent of the assets and premiums of the U.S life insurance and annuity industry.

Governor Kempthorne advocates to policy-makers at all levels of government about the important role life insurers play in providing financial and retirement security to American families. His efforts help shape national and state policies that make it easier for families to manage risk and ensure they have long-term savings and guaranteed income-for-life options in retirement.

Governor Kempthorne was born in 1951 in San Diego, California, but has called Idaho his home state for most of his life. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Governor Kempthorne began his commitment to public service in 1985, when he was elected Mayor of the City of Boise, Idaho. After serving seven years as Mayor, he was elected to the United States Senate in 1993. With Idaho issues close to his heart, he left the Senate after one term and was elected Governor of Idaho in 1998, and was easily re-elected for a second term in 2002. While serving as Governor, Kempthorne achieved the largest Indian Water Rights settlement in Idaho’s history, ending 150 years of dispute.

In 2006, Governor Kempthorne returned to Washington, D.C. to serve President George W. Bush. He was nominated and confirmed as the 49th Secretary of the Interior, charged with resurrecting the Department’s tradition of responsible stewardship of public lands. In this role, Governor Kempthorne managed 20 percent of U.S. lands with an annual budget of $18 billion.

Governor Kempthorne has proven himself to be a leader unbound by political affiliation. While in the U.S. Senate, he authored two strong bipartisan bills on state mandates and safe drinking water that were signed into law by President Bill Clinton and remain enacted today. Governor Kempthorne also understands the importance of international partners to U.S. prosperity, and has led numerous trade missions and delegations to key trading nations such as Japan, China, Korea, and Costa Rica.

In addition to his accomplishments as a public servant, Governor Kempthorne has served as Chairman of the National Governors Association and the Western Governors Association, and was President of the Council of State Governments.

Governor Kempthorne and his wife, Patricia, also a University of Idaho graduate, have two adult children, Heather and Jeff.

In previous positions at Finance, Mr. Swedlove was responsible for the 2001 financial sector review exercise, culminating in the total revamping of financial sector legislation. He was also the first Chair of the Committee on Trade in Financial Services of the World Trade Organization in Geneva, the Chair of the Negotiating Group on Financial Services in the Uruguay Round of the WTO, and lead negotiator for Canada in financial services at the NAFTA negotiations. Prior to joining Finance, Mr. Swedlove worked in the Industry and Energy departments of the federal government.

Julie Dickson was appointed Superintendent of Financial Institutions in July 2007, for a seven year term.

Ms. Dickson joined the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) in April 1999, and was Assistant Superintendent, Regulation Sector, from January 2000 to June 2006, when she was appointed Deputy Superintendent. In October 2006, she was appointed Acting Superintendent.

Prior to joining OSFI, Ms. Dickson served in both the public and private sectors. In the federal government, she served for 15 years with the Department of Finance, primarily in areas related to financial institution policy. In the private sector, she served as Group Leader of the Financial Institutions Practice for a national consulting firm from 1995 to 1998.

She is a member of the Accounting Standards Oversight Council of Canada, and was a member of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision from 2002 to 2006. She also represents OSFI on the Financial Stability Board and the Integrated Supervisors group.

As Superintendent, Ms. Dickson serves on the Council of Governors of the Canadian Public Accountability Board, the board of directors of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the board of directors of the Toronto Leadership Centre.

Ms. Dickson, 53, has a Masters of Economics from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours Economics) from the University of New Brunswick.

Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions

Created in 1987 by an Act of Parliament, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions is the primary regulator and supervisor of federally registered deposit-taking institutions, insurance companies, and federally registered private pension plans. OSFI's mandate is to advance and administer a regulatory framework that contributes to public confidence in a strong, stable and competitive financial system.

Janet L. Ecker has a proven track record of accomplishment inside and outside government in public policy and public affairs. A former Ontario Finance Minister, she managed some of the toughest files at Queen’s Park from social services and education, to economic policy and public-private partnerships.

Now President of the Toronto Financial Services Alliance (TFSA), she heads a growing public-private partnership dedicated to increasing Toronto’s role as a global financial hub and one of the two pre-eminent financial centres in North America. First established by the City of Toronto in partnership with the financial industry, TFSA works on behalf of the entire financial cluster, including its business and educational support sectors.

As its partnerships have expanded under her leadership to include the federal and provincial governments, TFSA’s role is growing to encompass business attraction initiatives and specifically targeted research to drive strategic growth and marketing activities. It focuses on Toronto’s strong value proposition as a financial hub, the sector’s growing international reputation for safety and stability during the recent global economic turmoil, the City’s excellent quality of life and its diverse, well-educated talent pool. Working with Ontario, the City and its education and financial sector partners, TFSA has established the Centre of Excellence for Financial Services Education to leverage the region’s talent advantages. Ms. Ecker also serves as Public Policy Advisor to Tramore Group, a project and change management professional services firm. The former chair of the Rouge Valley Health System, she sits on a number of corporate and non-profit boards, is a former fellow with the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University, and is also a frequent public speaker and media commentator. The first woman to deliver a budget in Ontario in 2002, she received a “Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award” from the Women’s Executive Network and the Richard Ivey School of Business in 2003. She is also a member of the founding committee for Equal Voice, a national, multi-partisan organization working to elect more women.

Joan Lamm-Tennant is the Global Chief Economist and Risk Strategist of Guy Carpenter Company, LLC, the reinsurance and risk management operating company of Marsh & McLennan Companies.  In addition to her current responsibilities at Guy Carpenter, Joan serves on the MMC’s ERM Advisory Committee; and leads a joint industry Microinsurance Initiative.  Joan is the recipient of the 2013 APIW Insurance Woman of the Year and the 2012 International Insurance Society Kenneth Black Award for service and commitment to the advancement of the global industry.

Prior to joining Guy Carpenter in 2007, Joan was the founding President of General Reinsurance Capital Consultants (GRCC).  When initially joining General Reinsurance in 1997, Joan was an advisor to the Chief Investment Officer and Board on setting risk guidelines.  She also supported GenRe New England Asset Management, a subsidiary of General Reinsurance, in the design and delivery of risk and capital advisory services to insurers worldwide.

Prior to her executive positions in industry, Joan had a successful academic career.  She advanced from an Assistant Professor for Finance and Investments to the Thomas Labrecque Professor at Villanova University.  As a tenured scholar, Joan was a prolific author in academic and business journals and recipient of numerous awards for innovations in risk and capital management.  Today, Joan remains on the faculty of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania as an Adjunct Professor and held the Laurence and Susan Hirsch Chair in International Business.  Joan also holds a Adjunct Professorship at the University of Wisconsin.

Joan has extensive experience on public and professional boards.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors of two public companies, Selective Insurance and Ivans, Inc., and serves on the Board of the International Insurance Society.  Prior Board experience includes Turner Investment Advisors and Focus Trust Fund, American Risk and Insurance, and Financial Analyst Society.

Joan holds a Ph.D. in Finance and Investments from the University of Texas, Austin. In addition Joan holds an M.B.A. in Finance from St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas and a B.B.A. with Honors in Accounting from St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas. 

Dr. Robert W. Klein is Director of the Center for Risk Management and Insurance Research and an Associate Professor of Risk Management and Insurance at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Dr. Klein is a leading expert on insurance regulation and markets with 30 years of experience as a regulator and an academic researcher. He has published extensively on various topics in insurance and its regulation, including the structure and performance of insurance markets, solvency regulation, monitoring competition, price regulation, catastrophe risk, urban insurance issues, workers’ compensation, life insurance, and international insurance regulation. He also has testified frequently at legislative and regulatory hearings on significant issues affecting insurance consumers and the industry.

Prior to joining Georgia State University in September 1996, Dr. Klein was the Director of Research and Chief Economist for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. He also has served as staff economist for the insurance department and state legislature in Michigan. He has a B.A. (1976), M.A. (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) in economics from Michigan State University. Dr. Klein is a Sloan Fellow at the Financial Institutions Center at the Wharton School of Business. He has served on the Board of Directors for the American Risk and Insurance Association and currently serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Insurance Regulation and Risk Management and Insurance Review.

After graduating in mathematics, Volker Deville earned the doctorate in economics of the European University Institute. Areas of interest include international economics, demography, financial mathematics, and risk management; he lectures strategic management at Bayreuth University.

Volker Deville joined the Allianz Group in 1989, being responsible amongst others for global M&A activities and for financial planning and controlling. In 2000, he moved as deputy CEO to Allianz Life Insurance in South Korea. Some years later, he worked as Managing Director of Dresdner Bank on reducing its risk and exposure.

Since 2005, Volker Deville has served as Executive Vice President of Allianz SE as head of Group Development and currently at Government Relations and Public Policy. His tasks included the strategic positioning of the Allianz Group, international cooperation after the financial crisis, and work on risk and security issues.

Dr. Mary Kelly is Associate Professor (finance and insurance) and Chair of Insurance at Wilfrid Laurier University. She has a B. Math (Statistics) degree and a M. Math (Actuarial Science) degree, both from the University of Waterloo and a Doctorate in Commerce (Finance) from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Mary Kelly has also taught at University of Calgary and worked as an actuary. She has completed the Canadian Risk Manager designation and is an active member of the American Risk and Insurance Association. She is an ex-officio member of the Insurance Institute of Canada’s Academic Council and is involved in the redesign of the Institute’s FCIP program. Her research interests include the impact of regulation on property/casualty insurers, insurance solvency and automobile insurance. She has presented research at various academic and industry insurance conferences and has published in journals such as the Journal of Risk and Insurance, The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance,  North American Actuarial Journal and the Journal of Insurance Regulation.

Trained as an economist and accountant, Darrell has 15 years of experience in public policy formation. In 1996 following volunteer and work terms with AIESEC in Columbia and Korea, Darrell joined the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, providing policy and legislative support on diverse issues such as education, transportation and rural issues.

In 2000, Darrell joined the Insurance Bureau of Canada where he was responsible for coordinating the insurance industry's work on capital, accounting and competition issues.  In 2003, Darrell joined the Financial Services Commission of Ontario where he was responsible for research and policy analysis on statutory provisions in property insurance contracts, risk-based market conduct supervision and the establishment of the General Insurance Statistical Agency.

Currently the Chief Economist and Vice President of Financial Analysis and Regulatory Affairs at the Property and Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation (PACICC), Darrell has led PACICC’s work in analyzing industry economic trends and the monitoring of member institutions since 2004.  PACICC also conducts research on key topics related to financial institution insolvency, coordinating with and supporting academic research institutions across Canada.

Darrell received his undergraduate degree from Queen’s University and a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Toronto.  Darrell is also a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). Darrell was also an Olympic torchbearer for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Dr. Anne Kleffner is an Associate Professor of Risk Management and Insurance at the Haskayne School of Business. She joined the University of Calgary in 1992. Dr. Kleffner received her BSBA from Creighton University, and a PhD in Applied Economics and Managerial Science from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Dr. Kleffner teaches primarily in the undergraduate program in the areas of property and liability insurance and risk management. She also teaches in the Directors’ Education Program for the Institute of Corporate Directors and in the Executive MBA program. Her particular areas of research interest include enterprise risk management, insurance solvency, and automobile liability compensation systems. She has published research in The Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, The Journal of Insurance Regulation and The Ivey Business Journal.

Dr. Kleffner is an Associate Editor of The Journal of Insurance Issues and is a member of the Risk Theory Society. She is a Past President of the Board for Calgary Meals on Wheels. In her spare time she enjoys hiking, running, and traveling.

David Law is the Global Leader, Insurance for PwC. Since joining PwC in 1982, David has worked within the financial services industry, primarily focusing on the insurance sector. He is currently based in London but has spent the last 7 years leading our global audit and services to Swiss Re in Zurich. David has also previously worked in Hong Kong and Scotland.

As the Global Leader for Insurance David has responsibility for overseeing our services to the insurance industry. Prior to taking on this role he has been responsible for our Insurance and

Investment Management Assurance practice in London and Scottish Assurance practice. Chris Giles is an Executive Vice President and International Field Operations Manager for Chubb & Son. He was appointed to International Operations in May 2009, and is responsible for the profit and growth of Chubb’s business outside of the US.

Chris joined Chubb in 1995 to develop an A & H business in Europe. In 1998 he was appointed Managing Director and Senior Vice President for Chubb’s Asia Pacific operations. He was promoted to European Zone Officer in 2002 where he had overall responsibility for setting the strategic direction of Europe.

Chris graduated from Nottingham University in 1982 with a BA Hons. in Economics and Social History. He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute in London.

Malcolm has specialised in all aspects of management in Financial Services at senior level for the last 20 years. He consults in the UK and internationally with organisations interested in all aspects of long term saving and retail financial services. He is Director of Policy at the Tax Incentivised Savings Association, leading the work of the Association in Pensions, Distribution and Platforms.

He is also a Non-Executive Director of B&CE Insurance, provider of pensions and financial services to the construction industry and Chairman of Altus Ltd., a provider of software and consultancy in financial services. Malcolm is a founding Director of the Centre for Retirement Reform. Paul Kitson is a senior consultant with over 10 years’ experience advising a range of UK pension funds and their corporate sponsors on all aspects of pension risk management.

Over the last 5 years Paul has specialized in advising corporate sponsors and UK pension fund Trustees on derisking and transferring liability to insurance and banking counter-parties. In 2009 Paul led the Merchant Navy Officers Pension Fund (a multi-billion industry wide UK pension fund) £500m buy-in with Lucida (the specialist insurance company). This was the largest buy-in transaction of 2009.

In 2010 Paul led the ground-breaking transfer of £1.3bn pension liabilities via a synthetic buy-in from one of British Airways pension funds to Rothesay Life, the wholly owned insurance subsidiary of Goldman Sachs.

Paul has also been actively involved in a number of other risk transfer projects including advising on longevity hedging strategies, enhanced transfer value exercises and pension increase exchange exercises.

Ranjit Ajit Singh is Managing Director of the Securities Commission Malaysia and is responsible for the oversight of the Malaysian capital market. This includes direct responsibility for all regulated markets (equity and bonds), related market infrastructure for trading, clearing and settlement, the regulation and authorization of firms and representatives in investment banking, broking and asset management and for corporate and market surveillance.

Ranjit is the chairman of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) emerging market group on the regulation of secondary markets and co-chair of the task force on bond markets. He is also a member of numerous international task forces and was a member of the expert group that prepared the principles being used for international securities regulation. He serves as member of Bursa Malaysia’s capital market advisory committee, the National Payment’s Council and the Corporate Debt Restructuring Committee. He has chaired an ASEAN Finance Ministers’ task force, served as a member of the IMF’s expert group on governance, the Asia-Pacific Financial Reporting Advisory Group (APFRAG), and the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board. Donald A. Stewart is Chief Executive Officer of Sun Life Financial Inc.

A native of Scotland, Don joined Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada in London, England in 1969 and emigrated to Montreal in 1972.

In 1974, Don left the Company to work as a consultant in Toronto. He returned in 1980 to lead the Canadian Group Retirement Services Division. From 1986 to 1998 he held successive leadership positions in mutual funds, information technology, trust services, actuarial and worldwide operations. In 1998 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer.

Don is a director of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association, the American Council of Life Insurers and international aluminum products company Novelis Inc. He is a member of the Board of The Geneva Association, an international insurance think tank and research institution. In 2009, Don was appointed Chairman of Canada’s National Task Force on Financial Literacy. 

Born in 1946, Don holds a degree in Natural Philosophy from the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1968 with first class honours. He became a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries in 1972, and attended the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School in 1991.

Larry D. Zimpleman is chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Principal Financial Group®. He is responsible for overall management of the company. 

Zimpleman joined the company in 1971 as an actuarial intern.  From 1976 to 1997 he served in various management and leadership positions at the officer level in the pension department. He was named vice president in 1997, senior vice president in 1999, executive vice president in 2001, president of Retirement and Investor Services in 2003, and president and chief operating officer in 2006. He was named to president and chief executive officer in 2008 and to his current position in 2009.

Zimpleman earned his bachelor’s degree and his master’s degree in business administration from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.  He currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for Drake University. Michael J. Morrissey has been President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Insurance Society since 2009, and has been a member for more than 18 years. The IIS is an organization of insurance executives, regulators and academics, whose mission is to facilitate the worldwide transfer of insurance research and innovations and to foster the development of

A widely respected global insurance leader, Mr. Patrick Ryan formed Ryan Specialty Group, LLC (RSG) in 2010. RSG is an international holding company specializing in wholesale brokerage, MGU/MGA underwriting management and other specialty services to agents, brokers and carriers. Graham S. Watson is Senior Executive Vice President and Head of Global Mortality Markets for Reinsurance Group of America, Incorporated. In this role, which he assumed in October 2010, he has global responsibility for RGA’s mortality business.

Graham’s first job in the insurance industry was in 1970. Throughout his long career, he has served on the boards of more than 30 life, non-life, reinsurance and other financial services companies.

He received B.A. and M.A. degrees in Political Economy from the University of Toronto, and was for several years a Doctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto’s School of Graduate Studies.

Clive Cowdery is Founder of the Resolution Group, a financial services investment company first formed in 2003.  The Company has raised over $12 billion to acquire and restructure companies in the life assurance and asset management markets, primarily in the United Kingdom.

Clive started his career in insurance as a broker and, before founding Resolution, was Chairman and Chief Executive of General Electric’s primary insurance operations in Europe. Before joining GE in 1998, he co-founded J. Rothschild International/Scottish Amicable International, both European cross-border insurance businesses based in Dublin.

Clive is also Chairman of the charity, The Resolution Foundation, an independent research and policy group dedicated to improving the lives of low pay workers. 

A board member of Willis Re, Rowan leads the company's analytics team and resources to support risk modelling, risk management and reinsurance transactions. He is also Chairman of the Willis Research Network (WRN), the world's largest collaboration between public science and the re/insurance industry.

In 2008 Rowan was appointed by the UK Science Minister to Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) the public body which oversees public environmental science expenditure. He also sits on the Governing Board of the Global Earthquake Model Foundation, Pavia, Italy and the Advisory Committee of the US National Centre of Atmospheric Research Earth System Laboratory, Boulder, USA.

Rowan began his career underwriting reinsurance at Syndicate 1095 at Lloyd's before founding the international risk information company WIRE Ltd in 1994 which he sold to Willis in 2000.

Mr Douglas was educated in geography with degrees from Durham and Bristol universities.

Research Interests

Recent and current projects include: Study of science-policy interactions generally and specifically in the context of Arctic climate; examination of weather storms, their impacts and their predictability; relationships between human health and weather; natural hazards research.

Dr. Porter has 18 years of experience assessing earthquake and hurricane risk for insurers, commercial and institutional building owners, and local governments. He has developed and applied a second-generation performance-based earthquake engineering methodology to assess probabilistic risk in terms of repair costs, casualties, and loss of use ("dollars, deaths, and downtime"). He is the author of over 50 scholarly and professional publications on multi-hazard risk. Clients include FEMA, OES, USGS, SCEC, CEA, Global 1000 corporations and insurance companies.

Prior to joining the Storm Center staff, Dr. Lorilee A. Medders was an Assistant Professor of Risk Management and Insurance in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. She joined that department's faculty in 1999, and also served as the department's Director of External Relations, undergraduate program advisor and faculty adviser to the Zeta Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, a national risk management and student organization. Dr. Medders received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama in 1990 and her Ph.D. from Georgia State University in 1995.  Dr. Medders served as Assistant Professor of Finance at Georgia Southern University from 1994-1998.

Her areas of research interest include business risk management decision making models, global risk issues, catastrophe risk financing and reputational risk management. She has presented numerous papers on these subjects to both academic and industry groups. Her consulting clients have included Fortune 500 companies as well as smaller companies and nonprofit organizations. Currently, Dr. Medders is especially involved in catastrophe risk financing programs for several companies within the utilities industry.

She has lectured on a broad range of risk-related topics. Her areas of greatest teaching expertise, however, lie in business risk management, global risk assessment, insurance company strategic management, risk modeling and ethics. She has spoken to numerous corporate, nonprofit, government and student groups around the United States on these topics. 

Rui Pinho serves as the Secretary General of the GEM Foundation, acting as its CEO. He first graduated in Portugal as a Civil Engineer, and then obtained Masters and Doctoral degrees in Earthquake Engineering from Imperial College London, where he also then worked as a Lecturer. In 2001, Dr. Pinho moved from the UK to Italy, joining the Structural Mechanics Department at the University of Pavia, where he still holds a position as Assistant Professor of Structural Design.

Before joining the GEM Foundation, Dr. Pinho served as Head of the Seismic Risk Section of the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE, www.eucentre.it), Deputy Coordinator of the LESSLOSS 46-partner European research network (www.lessloss.org), Manager of the Centre for Post-Graduate Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE School, www.roseschool.it), Deputy Coordinator of the international Erasmus Mundus Masters course in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (MEEES, www.meees.org), Manager of the IUSS Press (www.iusspress.it), Co-founder and Technical Director of Seismosoft (Software Solutions for Earthquake Engineering, www.seismosoft.com).

Dr. Pinho has authored more than 150 publications and supervised more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate research theses and dissertations, mainly on the topics of seismic risk and loss estimation at variable geographical scales, assessment and mitigation of seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete structures, development of advanced analytical tools for analysis of structures subjected to seismic action, validation of innovative earthquake-resistant design/assessment approaches. Dr. Pinho is also peer reviewer and/or editorial board member of 20 international scientific journals, has been guest speaker in a number of conferences, workshops and short courses, and is the recipient of a number of awards, including the 2008 EERI Shah’s Prize for Innovation.

Stephen Packard is a Director in Deloitte Consulting’s Insurance Strategy & Operations practice, based in Hartford, Connecticut.  He has more than 25 years of experience assisting insurance companies deal with some of their most complex business issues, including:  strategy formulation and execution; corporate restructuring; shareholder value analysis; competitive benchmarking; product development; mergers, acquisitions and divestitures; business turn-arounds; and technology strategy and implementation. 

Prior to joining Deloitte, Stephen served in a variety of senior executive positions at Aetna, Travelers, and The Hartford Insurance Group.  He is an attorney and a member of the Connecticut and New York State Bars.  He was formerly a partner in Accenture’s global insurance practice and leader of its U.S. Mergers & Acquisition practice.   

Stephen has written and spoken on numerous insurance topics at various U.S. and international industry forums. He is a longstanding member of the International Insurance Society, and a member of the IIS Research Committee.

Greg Locraft, an Executive Director, covers the Property-Casualty Insurance industry. He joined Morgan Stanley in 2009 and has 16 years of investment industry experience. Greg spent 11 years, from 1998 to 2009, as an analyst and portfolio manager at MFS Investments and WP Stewart. During part of that time, he had primary coverage responsibility for insurance, biotechnology, and aerospace & defense; later, he was the lead portfolio manager on three products, co-head of the MFS Research Analyst fund, and sector leader for the financials team. Greg began his investment career as a financial consultant with Smith Barney in 1993. He holds an MBA from Harvard and a BA in political science and history from Williams College.

Mr. Vandever is responsible for investment banking coverage of insurance companies and other financial institutions at Goldman Sachs. His clients include many of the largest US life insurance companies, US and Bermuda property/casualty insurance companies, and other insurance industry participants. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1999 and worked in the Financial Institutions Group for six years before moving to the Americas Financing Group in 2005 to help build the firm’s insurance risk management group. In 2006, he moved back to the Financial Institutions Group and became a managing director the same year. Over the past 11 years, Mr. Vandever has worked on approximately 75 announced transactions spanning advisory, public securities offerings, private equity, principal investing, structured finance, capital management, and derivative transactions. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, he worked in various roles at Merrill Lynch, PMA Capital, and Deloitte & Touche, where he was a certified public accountant.

Mr. Vandever received an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania.

Michael J. Morrissey has been President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Insurance Society since 2009, and has been a member for more than 18 years. The IIS is an organization of insurance executives, regulators and academics, whose mission is to facilitate the worldwide transfer of insurance research and innovations and to foster the development of

networks across international markets. The IIS, which was

formed in 1964, has over 900 members from more than 90 countries representing key insurance companies, academic regulators and associations around the globe.

Prior to joining the IIS, Mr. Morrissey was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Firemark Investments. Mr. Morrissey was the Chief Investment Officer for the firm and invested in public and private insurance companies around the world. Mr. Morrissey has advised insurance company managements and regulators, and served on a number of insurance company boards. Morrissey currently is a member on the board of directors of Selective Insurance Group, Inc., where he chairs the Finance Committee.

Mr. Morrissey is the global insurance industry representative on the G-20 Private Sector Taskforce of Regulated Professions and Industries. He is also a member of the American Risk & Insurance Association, the

Asia Pacific Risk & Insurance Association, the European Group of Risk & Insurance Economists, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is a past president of the Association of Insurance and Financial Analysts.

Mr. Morrissey holds a B.A. from Boston College, an M.B.A. from

Dartmouth College and has completed the Harvard Business School’s Corporate Finance Management Program. Mr. Morrissey is also a Chartered Financial Analyst, and is profiled in "Who's Who in the World".

Frank Swedlove is President of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association.  Established in 1894, CLHIA has 65 members accounting for 99 per cent of the life and health insurance in force in Canada.

Mr. Swedlove joined CLHIA in July 2007 after spending the previous year as President of the Financial Action Task Force, the international body headquartered in Paris responsible for the fight against global money laundering and terrorist financing.

Prior to that appointment, Mr. Swedlove served as a senior federal official. In his last position as Assistant Deputy Minister of the Financial Sector Policy Branch of the Department of Finance, Mr. Swedlove was the principal advisor to several Ministers of Finance regarding policy development on financial institutions and Canadian financial markets, playing a key role in issues throughout the sector and in international trade in financial services.

In previous positions at Finance, Mr. Swedlove was responsible for the 2001 financial sector review exercise, culminating in the total revamping of financial sector legislation. He was also the first Chair of the Committee on Trade in Financial Services of the World Trade Organization in Geneva, the Chair of the Negotiating Group on Financial Services in the Uruguay Round of the WTO, and lead negotiator for Canada in financial services at the NAFTA negotiations. Prior to joining Finance, Mr. Swedlove worked in the Industry and Energy departments of the federal government.

Tim Yeates is Executive Director of Business Development at Axco Insurance Information Services

Ltd., the leading firm of information providers to the international industry.

During his varied career, Tim has accumulated broad expertise in the insurance industry and enjoys a global network of colleagues in the fields of insurance, reinsurance, risk consulting, training and knowledge management.

For some years he has had a special interest in introducing insurance and risk management best practice into countries with major risk exposures such as natural disasters. His preferred approach has always been a collaborative one involving governments, academics, multilateral organizations, charities, commercial insurers and other firms from the private sector with specialist expertise. He was lead consultant for MMC/Marsh on the World Bank sponsored Turkish catastrophe pool project (TCIP) and latterly a Director of the Commonwealth Disaster Management Agency.

Tim has worked extensively with major industrial companies and financial institutions - primarily from the US and Europe - in his capacity as broker, consultant or captive manager. He has held senior posts in London, Paris and Luxembourg and ran his own international consultancy for several years before joining Axco.

Mr. Bhargav Dasgupta, is the Managing Director & CEO of the ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Limited, the largest private sector general insurance company in India.

Mr. Dasgupta began his career with the erstwhile ICICI Limited in 1992 in the Projects & Corporate Finance Division. Since then he has held key leadership positions in diverse business areas of the Group including Oil & Gas financing, E-commerce, Technology Management, Corporate Strategy and Treasury. In his final assignment in the bank, he set up ICICI Bank’s International Banking Group. Started in 2002, under his leadership this group built an international presence in fourteen countries and contributed almost 20% of the business of the bank by 2006. In that year, he was named as one of the top 25 ‘young Executives in India’ by Business Today, one of the leading business magazines in India. In October 2006, he was elevated to the Board of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Limited as Executive Director responsible for Sales, Distribution, Product and Marketing for both Retail and Group business of the Company. He took over his current role in May 2009.

Mr. Bhargav Dasgupta holds a PGDBA from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and a B.E (Mechanical) degree from Jadavpur University. After completing his engineering course, he had worked for Tata Motors from 1988-90.

Keith E. Walters has extensive experience in the insurance and financial services industry. Prior to his consulting roles, he has worked in the industry in Canada, UK and over six years in the Asia region. Keith has more than 25 years of diversified experience and has worked in a variety of actuarial and business management roles, including product development and pricing, risk management and financial reporting, asset/liability management and investment management and business development.

Keith joined Tower Watson initially as the Managing Consultant of the Toronto office and was transferred to Singapore with Tower Watson in 2010. He is now Director, Risk Consulting & Software, South East Asia for Tower Watson.

Keith is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, and Fellow of the Singapore Actuarial Society. He completed an MBA at Cass Business School (City University in London, UK). He is also a frequent presenter at industry conferences and has contributed articles to a number of industry publications.

Ramy Tadros is a Partner at Oliver Wyman and the Head of the Insurance Practice in North America. Mr. Tadros has over 14 years of experience in financial services and insurance.

He has led numerous consulting engagements for leading insurers around strategy, distribution, product, and strategic finance issues. Some of his recent work includes: consulting with the strategic planner of a top 5 US life insurer to identify and prioritize growth opportunities in the US life retirement & life markets, and recommend an alternative target operating model (product manufacturing and distribution coverage) to maximize the growth potential of the firm; working with the CFO of a leading US-based global insurer around revising the existing approach towards capital allocation decisions to better support the insurer’s strategic planning process; and advising the CEO of a top 10 life insurer around articulating a board-level strategic risk appetite statement.

Prior to his relocation to North America, Mr. Tadros was based out of the firm’s London office where he led the insurance risk and finance practice, and consulted to leading life insurers in the UK, the Netherlands, Australia and Southeast Asia.

He is a regular speaker at various industry forums and has authored several Oliver Wyman reports including, “Variable Annuities: In search of a premium valuation”, “The Deficiency List: Rethinking the risk agenda for insurers” and “The Hidden Hedge Funds within Life Insurers”. In addition, he co-authored a recent equity analyst report around the strategy and economics of the variable annuity business.

Mr. Tadros graduated from Harvard University with a BS in Economics with Highest Honors.

Martin Hegarty, Managing Director, is a portfolio manager within BlackRock Fundamental Fixed Income. Mr. Hegarty is the co-head of BlackRock's global inflation-linked portfolios.

Prior to joining BlackRock in 2010, Mr. Hegarty was a Director at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, acting as a market maker and primary risk taker in Treasury Inflation Protected Securities within their Global Rates and Currencies Group. Prior to joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch in 2003, he was an Associate at Merrill Lynch in the Global Rates and Currencies Unit in London, acting as a market maker in European, Scandinavian and UK inflation linked bonds.

Mr. Hegarty earned a BS degree, with honors, in economics from Rhodes University, South Africa in 1997.

Kurt E. Karl is a Senior Vice President and head of Swiss Re’s Economic Research and Consulting, North America. Dr. Karl has responsibility for the North American segment of Swiss Re’s “sigma” insurance industry research. In addition, he supports Swiss Re’s strategic planning and provides internal consulting on products and economic risks. He also supplies insights and forecasts on the U.S. and global economies to Swiss Re Asset Management for use in a variety of corporate decisions, including asset management.

He is an expert on the U.S. and global economies with extensive experience and knowledge of foreign markets and has lived and worked in Europe, Africa and Asia. Dr. Karl is a contributor to many forecasting surveys, including those of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Blue Chips, Bloomberg and Reuters. He is widely quoted in the financial press.

Prior to joining Swiss Re, Dr. Karl was chief international economist at WEFA, Inc., an economic forecasting firm located near Philadelphia. He has a B.A. from the University of Oregon, a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Mr. Maciag has developed a broad knowledge and understanding of the role technology plays in the global insurance marketplace today.  He joined ACORD in 1977 and served in various roles including Vice President of Automation, Corporate Secretary & Treasurer and Executive Vice President prior to being appointed President in 1994.

Mr. Maciag led the expansion of ACORD to serve the Life & Annuity segment of our business followed by the merger with WISe in London and Brussels that increased global participation for large commercial lines and reinsurance, including the London Market.  He was a monthly guest technology columnist for ten years and is the author of two books “The Real-Time World� published in 2009 and “The Business Information Revolution� published in 2005. 

He is the principal advocate for industry standards and continues to author columns, host videos and moderate industry events.  He also publishes a personal blog.  Prior to joining ACORD, he held Operations and Systems positions with Chubb & Son and the National Council on Compensation Insurance.

ACORD is the nonprofit industry organization created in 1970 to support the development of standards to support the exchange of insurance information among all trading partners.

Dr. Kahane, who is Head of the Alfred Akirov Institute for Business and Environment at the University of Tel Aviv, Israel, is an influential figure in the insurance industry and in the actuarial profession, as a seminal thinker and a prominent insurance educator and researcher. Dr. Kahane is also an active entrepreneur in both the academic and business worlds. His activities have had a substantial impact on the insurance industry in the broadest sense, especially in Israel but also in Portugal and in the former Soviet Union countries. An internationally renowned pioneer of new concepts and ideas, he has served as advisor to companies on important insurance issues for more than four decades. He is a celebrated author and speaker who challenged the industry to implement innovations, and has been ranked among the most prolific researchers in insurance.

Chuck Johnston is vice president of global strategy and alliances for Oracle Insurance. Johnston has more than 20 years of leadership and expertise in insurance, financial services and information technology. He previously served in senior management roles at Siebel and Callidus software. Prior to this, he was vice president and director of insurance information strategies at META Group. During his more than three years at META Group, he was responsible for managing the advisory firm’s insurance research agenda and vertical analysts, providing strategic insight into industry trends, technology offerings, and strategic consulting services to insurance and financial services companies. Johnston also has held various information technology and business leadership positions at Phoenix Home Life Mutual Insurance. Johnston is a graduate of the University of Connecticut where he earned a BA degree in Psychology.

Robert E. Hoyt is the Dudley L. Moore, Jr. Chair of Risk Management and Insurance in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. He teaches corporate risk management and enterprise risk management and serves as the Department Head for Insurance, Legal Studies, and Real Estate. He was Interim Dean of the Terry College in 2007 and has been on the UGA faculty since 1988. He is a recipient of the Richard B. Russell Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award from UGA, the Terry College’s Outstanding Service Award and in 2009 the Terry College’s Outstanding Teaching Award.

Dr. Hoyt holds a degree in actuarial science from the University of Nebraska and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in risk and insurance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he was an S.S. Huebner Fellow. In 1995 he was a Fulbright Visiting Professor of Risk Management at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, in 2009 he was a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Munich, and he previously studied at the University of Cologne, Germany. His research interests are focused in the areas of corporate hedging, enterprise risk management, catastrophe risk management, the economics of insurance fraud, liability system costs and insurer insolvency. His research has appeared in various scholarly and trade journals including the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, the Journal of Law and Economics, the North American Actuarial Journal, the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, Risk Management and Insurance Review, the Journal of Insurance Regulation, the Journal of Insurance Issues, the CPCU Journal and the Journal of Actuarial Practice. Dr. Hoyt has offered expert testimony in litigation relating to pension valuation and insurance contract interpretation and has served as a risk management consultant to various public and private sector organizations including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He is a trustee of the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation, a director of the Spencer Educational Foundation and serves on the boards of Athens Regional Medical Center and Athens Area Health Plan Select.

Dr. Hoyt is Past President of the American Risk and Insurance Association, Past President of the Risk Theory Society, Past President of the Southern Risk and Insurance Association, a Vice President of the International Insurance Society, and a member of the Risk and Insurance Management Society, the Western Risk and Insurance Association, and the American Finance Association. Joan T. Schmit holds the American Family Insurance Chair in Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she has been on the faculty since
1988. She has just returned to Madison from a one-year sabbatical at the University of Bath in England and St. Gallen University in Switzerland, after having served for six years as first department chair, then vice dean, and ultimately interim dean of the Wisconsin School of Business. She also serves as an affiliate faculty member in the Nelson Institute for
Environmental Studies, the Peking University China Center for Insurance and Social Security Research, and in the insurance program at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. Prior to joining the faculty at Wisconsin, Professor Schmit spent four years on the faculty at the University of South Carolina.

Professor Schmit has published extensively in insurance and legal journals. While her early research focused on the interaction of law and economics in an insurance and risk
management context, she has expanded into new dimensions, including enterprise risk management and reputation risk concerns. Currently her work is centered on aspects of
developing insurance in emerging markets.

The program in risk management and insurance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has existed since 1938 and currently is ranked second among all programs in the United States.
